With revolutionary laws passed in two American states, pot's longstanding, nationwide prohibition is breaking up. Though the fight for true national legalization is just getting started, growers and entrepreneurs in Washington and Colorado are already making money hand over fist, and setting the bar for a business model that's peaceful, profitable, and hard for other states to ignore...
But it’s not all ... roses. Growers and investors are trading in their gardens in the shadows for a world of state regulations, criminal background checks, security passes, fingerprint IDs, grow-op inspections, picky customers, and taxes. In the legal haze, with the eyes of the country on them, only the most daring of prospective purveyors is willing to risk it all and do what it takes to become the next Jack Daniels.
Meet John. An f-bomb dropping crabber, investor, inventor, mechanical bull operator, newlywed, and megalomaniac marijuana tycoon. Along with his partner, Tom (an ex football player and iron man with a heart the size of a grizzly bear’s), John opened Top Shelf Cannabis – the first retail marijuana shop in Washington State. They made the first sale, they drew the biggest media attention, and they hired a treasure-trove of fun-loving misfit characters to run their shop. It was a dream come true. For everyone but John, who wasn’t quite done building his empire. Not by a long shot.
John’s next move was to get himself another partner, and open up a second store – right down the street! Tom was furious. It was outright betrayal. John’s response: “I’m not in this to make friends. I’m here to globally dominate the new motherf*&k!ing marijuana industry!”
Meet Travis Arket. John’s new partner. A star in his own right, Travis is a world class adventure seeker who spent 2 seasons on the hit TV show, Deadliest Catch. Travis’ vision for selling marijuana is different from Top Shelf’s. His new store - Northwest Cannabis Collective - boasts a cleaner, more professional customer experience and claims to offer a higher level of product quality. With the two stores just
a half mile apart, the one thing they both can agree on is that there simply isn’t enough room in the area for both.
But as the two stores battle it out to become the top shop in Washington, and the first to franchise out of state, John still has his eyes on the big picture. He knows that to control any industry, you have to have your hands in all levels of the business –
His next move will be his boldest yet. Purchasing a massive piece of land – just next door to BOTH his stores – John and a collection of investors have begun to build a 1.2 million square foot grow facility where he hopes the state’s most gifted growers will come to ply their trade. Why? Because John can offer them something nobody else in the country can: celebrity endorsement of their product.
John has already secured Julien Marley (Bob Marley’s son), and Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong) to be his first big brand names. These two pot activists and advocates will work with John and his team to design and develop custom strains of marijuana that will bear their name. In the retail world, branding and marketing is everything, and there are only two stores in the country that will be carrying Marley and Chong brand weed...
If this is the next dot com, John will settle for nothing less than becoming the next Bill Gates. As Travis, Tom, and the entire colourful cast of bud-tenders, investors, growers, and their families at home struggle to adapt and overcome in a new industry, ‘Breaking Legal’ will chronicle their stories and their struggles, offering viewers an inside look into the fastest growing industry in America today.
